NEWS: ANDRADE STATES 'F*CK CANELO', AIMS FOR CHARLO, BENAVIDEZ, PLANT IN 2023
By: Jay Calderon
For years, undefeated American Demetrius Andrade has heavily pursued a showdown with Super Middleweight kingpin Canelo Alvarez. Andrade even went so far as to call out the Mexican superstar at the post-fight press conference to his 2021 stoppage win over Billy Joe Saunders.
However, even while working with the same promoter in Matchroom and working with the same network in DAZN, a fight never materialized.
Now, after exhausting himself chasing the fight, Andrade seems disinterested in chasing any longer. When asked about a Canelo showdown during promotion for his upcoming bout with Demond Nicholson on Saturday, Andrade was more than dismissive.
Rather than focus on Alvarez, Andrade, who now works with television network Showtime under the Premier Boxing Champions umbrella, Demetrius turns his attention to new stablemates such as Middleweight titlist Jermall Charlo, and former Super Middleweight titlists Caleb Plant and David Benavidez.
"Man, fuck Canelo. I'm here at Showtime. Charlo, Plant, Benavidez -- anybody at 168 that's going to put on a great fight is what I'm looking for. Fuck Canelo," Andrade expressed.
While those big fights Andrade mentions may await in 2023, he first starts off his Saturday, taking on the aforementioned Nicolson as part of the Gervonta Davis vs. Hector Garcia under card. Still, Andrade expresses his desire to have his own big fight weekends. And he's willing to do what it takes to make those contests happen.
"I went to [Gennadiy Golovkin's] press conference, I went to Canelo's, I went to Charlo's -- I went to everybody. Win, lose or draw, let's make these fights happen. They are the best fights to make, and I want to be part of making the best fights in the sport I love to do."
These fights should be easy to make at this point, considering he works more closely with most of the bigger names in his new 168 pound division. Presumably, a showdown with Charlo or the winner of Plant-Benavidez, who are tentatively scheduled to face one another this year, should have a chance at seeing daylight in 2023.
Ironically enough, his attitude of ignoring Canelo and simply taking on the next best name is the best way to secure a showdown with Canelo. If Andrade were to keeping fighting bigger names -- and keep winning -- it likely forces Canelo's hand much more than simple trash-talk at a post-fight press conference.
