NEWS: CALEB PLANT VS. DAVID BENAVIDEZ OFFICIALLY SET FOR MARCH, SHOWTIME PPV
By: Jay Calderon
According to ESPN's Mike Coppinger, the highly-anticipated showdown between former Super Middleweight world titlists Caleb Plant and David Benavidez has been officially set.
Sources told ESPN that the bitter rivalry will finally be settled on March 25 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, airing on Showtime pay-per-view.
For months, the pair seemed on the verge of making the fight happen, but nothing official seemed to have materialized until now. With the details agreed upon, we will finally see these skillful combatants face off in the center of the ring, and not via social media and interviews.
In his most recent bout, Benavidez handily defeated former titlist David Lemiuex, stopping the Canadian in three frames back in May of last year. With the victory, the fast-handed Benavidez improved to 26-0 with 23 KOs.
Caleb Plant, 22-1 with 13 KOs as a pro, last fought in October, stopping former titlist Anthony Dirrell with a highlight reel knockout shot in the ninth.
If successful, Benavidez would certainly hold the claim as the second best 168 pounder in the world, making a bout with undisputed champion Canelo Alvarez a more attractive encounter down the road.
For Plant, having previously lost to Canelo in November of 2021, a route to the gold might be trickier. However, his improved stock in a win could mean solid options with the likes of former titlist Demetrius Andrade or current Middleweight champion Jermall Charlo.
