NEWS: CANELO ALVAREZ HEADING TOWARDS JOHN RYDER CLASH IN MAY, LIKELY IN MEXICO
By: Jay Calderon
It looks as though Canelo Alvarez will be making his long-awaited fight return to Mexico.
Early as a professional, Alvarez had the majority of his contests in his native country, before pursuing better options in the United States. Canelo last competed south of the border in 2011, when he stopped Kermit Cintron inside of five frames. Since then, Alvarez has competed exclusively in the United States.
Now, according to ESPN's Mike Coppinger, Canelo will defend his Super Middleweight world championship against mandatory challenger John Ryder on May 6, with Jalisco, Mexico likely to host the event.
While details have yet to be finalized, according to ESPN Deportes' Salvador Rodriguez, it appears as though Akron Stadium or Jalisco Stadium, along with two other locations, are the leading site candidates.
In his most recent outing, Canelo vanquished long-time rival Gennadiy Golovkin back in September. Since the win, Alvarez has undergone surgery on his left wrist.
Ryder, meanwhile, is coming off the biggest win of his career, stopping previouely-undefeated Zach Parker in November.
