NEWS: CHRIS EUBANK, JR. STILL HOPING TO FACE GENNADIY GOLOVKIN IN 2023
By: Jay Calderon
Back in 2014, Chris Eubank, Jr. and his team seemed on the verge of challenging then-undefeated world Middleweight titlist Gennadiy Golovkin in the biggest fight of his career.
However, after weeks of tedious negotiations, the fight fell through and Golovkin ultimately wound up facing Welterweight titlist Kell Brook at the 02 Arena in London, England.
While Eubank has gone on to have a solid career and even challenged for a Super Middleweight world title in 2018, Eubank, 32-2 with 23 KOs, admits he regrets letting the Golovkin fight slip away.
"The one regret of my career is [the Golovkin] fight fell through when it was going to be made all those years ago, through no fault of my own," Eubank told BoxingScene.com. "...I have to make that right. He has those belts and there's no one else in the division that people want to see him fight more than me. So, in 2023, that's what we are going to be pushing for after the Smith fight."
At 40 years of age, Golovkin isn't in the best form of his career, coming off a loss at the hands of rival Canelo Alvarez in September. However, the Alvarez loss came at 168 pounds, and, as Eubank expressed, he still holds two of the major belts at 160 pounds.
While it's not as marketable as it might have been a few years back, it's still a solid fight to make. It would be particularly big in England, where the fight would easily sell out one of the larger arenas in London.
Granted, Golovkin, 42-2-1 with 37 KOs, is a faded version of himself. He would still be a solid step up from most of Eubank, Jr.'s typical opposition.
Eubank will now face Liam Smith on January 21 at the Manchester Arena, live on Sky Sports.
