NEWS: CHRIS EUBANK, JR. TRIGGERS REMATCH CLAUSE, LOOKS SET FOR LIAM SMITH RETURN
By: Jay Calderon
According to Chris Eubank, Jr. himself, the rematch clause in his contract with Liam Smith has officially been enacted.
On January 21, to the shock of many, Eubank was stopped inside four rounds by Smith. Smith isn't a huge puncher, and Eubank had never been down before as a professional, making the outcome rather surprising.
Eubank and his promoters at Wasserman had worked a rematch clause into the original bouts agreement, and Chris said he would likely trigger the clause if there was fan demand for the return bout. Now, via his official Twitter account, Eubank confirmed that he intended to seek his rematch.
"This morning, I activated the rematch clause via my lawyers & sent to my promoters [Wasserman]. Happy Valentines Day, [Liam Smith]," Eubank, Jr. tweeted.
Outside of this post on social media, there have no details released. A venue and date will likely become known in the coming weeks.
Realistically, this was the only option for Eubank. If he were to leave this loss unavenged, he has less of a leg to stand on in the Middleweight division. While still a name, it's hard to imagine many of the other bigger names at 160 pounds finding a reason to fight Eubank.
If he managed to right his wrongs in the return bout, it obviously gives him a much better chance at facing some of those bigger names. It doesn't erase the loss, but it at least helps get him into a similar position to the one he occupied prior to the stoppage loss.
