NEWS: FRANK WARREN HOPEFUL TYSON FURY-OLEKSANDR USYK HAPPENS IN MARCH
By: Jay Calderon
Recently, Hall of Fame promoter Frank Warren spoke with iFL TV, and discussed the ongoing negotiations for the Heavyweight unification bout between WBC titlist Tyson Fury and world champion Oleksandr Usyk.
While the dealings have yet to be finalized, Warren seems confident his side and Alexander Krassyuk, the promoter of the aforementioned Usyk, will be able to work out any details needed.
That said, Warren did jokingly mention the failed negotiations between Fury and former Heavyweight titlist Anthony Joshua back in September, where both sides failed to get names to dotted lines. However, Warren seemed optimistic about Fury-Usyk.
"It's a big will to make this fight happen by both camps, it's just a matter of where and how much," Warren expressed. "But they are good people to deal with, and we're all positive about getting it over the line. Although, I said that about Joshua a few months ago, so I don't want to tempt fate. But, at the moment, it looks like everyone wants it to happen, especially the fighters."
The location seems to be one of the details still being worked out as of yet, as Warren admits a site has yet to be selected. While the leading candidate still seems to be Saudi Arabia, Warren stated it would all boil down to where the fighters can make the most for their performances.
Regardless, Warren expressed the site issue would need to be finalized rather quickly as they hope to stage the encounter in the first quarter or the coming year.
"...[A]t the moment, nothing has been done or agreed with anybody in Saudi. So, we've got a ways to go yet. The decision for the site will be made very quickly, because we want to get it on in March. If it's going on in March, it's got to be on sale soon, where ever it takes place," Warren said.
"So, the site will have to be taken care of very quickly, and we're not going to mess around or get one (bidder) against the other," continued the 70-year-old Warren. "It's just going to be about where the boys can make the most money."
Truthfully, the two reasonable options available for this encounter would be Saudi Arabia or London, likely at Wembley Stadium. America isn't an option currently, as Fury is unable to travel to the States due to a travel ban issue. In fairness, the United States wouldn't have likely been the most financially advantageous location anyway.
