NEWS: FRANK WARREN SUPPORTS MOSES ITAUMA'S AMBITION OF BECOMING YOUNGEST HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION
By: Jay Calderon
Heavyweight prospect Moses Itauma recently signed with Hall of Fame promoter Frank Warren's Queensberry Promotions, and he didn't take long to let people in on his goals.
Most noticeably, Itauma, 18, claimed he wanted to beat Mike Tyson's record by becoming the youngest Heavyweight champion in history. To do so, Itauma, born December 28, 2004, will have to capture world gold by sometime before April of 2025 to beat Mike's record of 20 years, four months.
Definitely ambitious.
However, his new promoter stressed that he wouldn't rush the move, but he also wouldn't stand in the way.
"As you will have heard from Moses himself, he harbors an ambition to be the youngest Heavyweight champion in history, setting himself the target of beating Mike Tyson to the punch," Warren wrote in his weekly column.
"I am fully supportive of our fighters setting the bar high and, if it is the right move when the time comes, we will certainly do our bit and make it happen for him," said Warren.
Interestingly enough for Itauma, he might have an easier path than some might expect. While nothing is "easy" in the sport, the timing of his debut and the moving pieces in the division could line up just right.
Currently, the champions in Oleksandr Usyk and Tyson Fury are 36 and 24 years of age, respectively. One could imagine that in a few years time, both men might be out of the sport, or at the very least easier fighters to handle at a more advanced age.
Of course, this is all conjecture. Still, it's nice to have another exciting, young face thrown into the division.
