NEWS: GERVONTA DAVIS PLEADS GUILTY TO HIT-AND-RUN CASE, AWAITS SENTENCING IN MAY
By: Jay Calderon
On Thursday, February 16, Lightweight star Gervonta Davis pleaded guilty to four counts originating from a car crash in November 2020.
According to ESPN's Jamison Hensley, Davis waved his right to a trial with the guilty plea, and, Hensley stated, "Circuity Judge Althea M. Handy told Davis that he's doing so 'with no agreement of what penalty will be at sentencing.'"
Davis was initially indicted on March 22, 2021, after it was stated he ran a red light leaving a birthday party in his native Baltimore, striking another car, and injuring the vehicles' driver and three passengers. Davis was believed to have fled the scene minutes later without properly reporting the incident.
The exact four counts Davis pleaded guilty to are: leaving the scene of an accident involving bodily injury, failing to notify of property damage, driving with a revoked license and running a red light.
Davis is scheduled to be sentenced May 5.
From a boxing perspective, this could potentially be yet another hurdle in the way of Davis vs. Ryan Garcia being made. For months, the teams of the aforementioned fighters have gone back and forth, seemingly looking over every detail of a potential fight-finalizing contract.
One could imagine that pending jail time could potentially derail the contest, if not distract Davis, especially considering the fight has a tentative date of April 15. Meaning, Davis would be sentenced merely 20 days after the Garcia clash.
