NEWS: JOSH TAYLOR CLAIMS COMPLACENCY CAUSES POOR PERFORMANCE AGAINST JACK CATTERALL
World Jr. Welterweight champion Josh Taylor admits to making a mistake in his first encounter with Englishman Jack Catterall.
Back in February of last year, the pair met in Glasgow, Scotland, in what was to be a homecoming celebration for Taylor. However, Catterall seemingly won most of the rounds, even dropping Taylor in the eighth, only to have two of the judges side with the heavily-favored Taylor.
While Taylor has always contested that he feels he did enough to earn the decision, he recently told Sky Sports that he made the mistake of becoming complacent.
With a career that has seen some incredible highs, including winning the World Boxing Super Series and completely unifying 140 pounds, Taylor claims he simply took his eye off the ball when it came time to face Catterall.
"I think what I had achieved in 18 fights and in only four or five years as a professional, becoming an undisputed champion, no one's ever done it before in the UK in the four belt era, creating a massive part of history, I just got a little bit complacent," Taylor admitted.
While Taylor stated he had hoped to learn from the mistakes of fighters from the past, he unfortunately had to learn for himself. However, Taylor doesn't intend to make the same mistake twice.
"I tried to learn from other athletes and boxers letting complacency creep in but I am only human at the end of the day and it did creep in a little bit but I won't be making the same mistake twice," said Taylor.
While complacency might have played a part, it must be stressed that Catterall did his part as well. He put forth a very good fight stylistically, and even managed to adjust when Taylor looked to make a late surge.
Time will tell if Taylor can return to form when the pair meet later this year.
