NEWS: LIAM SMITH TO WEIGH HIS OPTIONS AFTER MASSIVE WIN OVER CHRIS EUBANK, JR.
By: Jay Calderon
In the biggest upset of the year thus far, former Jr. Middleweight titlist Liam Smith stopped Middleweight contender Chris Eubank, Jr. inside of only four rounds at the AO Arena in Manchester, England.
While Smith was a decent underdog to win the contest, it was even far less expected he would win via stoppage against the usually iron-chinned Eubank. However, Smith, who warned all that would listen during the build up that a stoppage over Eubank shouldn't be a surprise, dropped his man twice before the bout was waved off.
Now, with perhaps the biggest win of his career, Smith sits pretty in an interesting Middleweight division. While their was a rematch clause that Eubank could enact if he so chooses, Smith and his team have some serious options to ponder in the coming weeks.
"...We'll see what happens next," Smith told Sky Sports during his post-fight interview. "Chris wanted the rematch and I agreed to a rematch beforehand. ... If not, then we move on. I'm in a very good position now at 160 and 154 (pounds). Over the next month or two, we've got a big decision to make."
To his credit, the defeated Eubank was gracious in his brief interview, mostly congratulatory towards Smith. After a nasty fight week promotional run that saw both men aim personal attacks at one another, Eubank seemed beyond that, and suggested he would be open to the rematch should the fans be interested.
"Big congratulations to him. I thought it could have gone on, but he caught me with a big shot. Listen, the build up was the build up. It got a bit ugly in the end, I regretted that. I respect your family, and always have. If the fans want to see a rematch, we can get it on again," Eubank said.
A rematch would be very interesting, especially considering this result. Everything from the odds to the promotion for the return would definitely be different, and keep the second installment interesting.
