NEWS: MALIK SCOTT DOESN'T GIVE OLEKSANDR USYK A CHANCE AGAINST DEONTAY WILDER
Former Heavyweight titlist Deontay WIlder could be one fight away from getting another crack at reclaiming gold in boxing's biggest division.
Recently, the WBC ordered a bout between Wilder and fellow former titlist Andy Ruiz, with the winner in line to challenge for the sanctioning body's version of the belt. Wilder's trainer Malik Scott recently told iFL TV that he hopes to see his pupil in action sometime near March, presumably against the aforementioned Ruiz.
As it stands now, the title is possessed by former Wilder foe Tyson Fury. However, Fury and his team are currently in the midst of negotiations with world champion Oleksandr Usyk for a massive unification bout early this year. Theoretically, should Wilder get beyond Ruiz, he would face the winner.
While Scott would personally love for his charge to have yet another shot at Fury, with whom Wilder has shared the ring three times, going 0-2-1, Malik was asked about the possibility of Wilder taking on the new challenge of Usyk.
Scott was highly-complimentary of the Ukrainian, but stressed that he wouldn't give Usyk much of a chance against the hard-hitting Wilder.
"Let's get this straight: No one on U.S. soil or this soil here (England) respects Oleksandr Usyk more than me. No one. As a boxer, as a man's man," Scott told iFL TV, at the time in London to corner FaZe Temperrr for his bout with KSI. "But, coming up against Deontay Wilder, I just think it's humanly impossible, biomechanically, for him to take that missile repetitiously. Over and over. I just can't see it going the distance, and I see Deontay knocking him out."
One can understand where Scott is coming from, as Usyk is a relatively smaller Heavyweight, standing only 6'3" and 220 pounds, far smaller than the modern big man. While Wilder isn't much heavier, he possesses 6 inches more in reach and is 4 inches taller -- and that's not even factoring in his other-worldly power.
It will be interesting to see which of these mentioned fights actually take place in 2023.
