NEWS: MIKAELA MAYER WANTS KATIE TAYLOR IN 2023
By: Jay Calderon
Once-beaten Mikaela Mayer isn't looking to let her lone career defeat damper her aspirations for 2023.
In a bitter encounter with rival Alycia Baumgardner, Mayer dropped a split decision in what was a unification bout at 130 pounds. While Mayer would have preferred a rematch with Baumgardner, that fight doesn't seem in her immediate future.
Despite the setback, Mayer intends to have a big 2023. For starters, Mayer, 17-1 with 5 KOs, intends to make the move up to Lightweight.
"I'm going up to 135 [pounds] for this next fight, I'm going to start making a name for myself in that division," Mayer told Sky Sports.
That "next fight", which Mayer claims is 90% done, will be her first in a new division. However, it won't be the biggest in a new weight class in 2023 if Mayer has her say.
"Katie Taylor has always been on my list," Mayer explained. "I have a lot of respect for her, she has accomplished a lot in this sport and I want to challenge myself against her."
In many respects, it's a great move for Mayer. Firstly, it's likely the biggest fight she can make, and one that certainly have it's appeal.
What's more, if victorious, it would propel her upwards in the sport, and help better position herself in a potential rematch with Baumgardner down the line.
For what it's worth, Mayer also claims she intends to move up as high as 147 pounds in the next few chapters of her career.
