NEWS: OTTO WALLIN STILL WANTS A CRACK AT DILLIAN WHYTE
By: Jay Calderon
Heavyweight contender Otto Wallin is still searching for another big shot in the sport.
Back in September of 2019, Wallin pressed current Heavyweight titlist Tyson Fury to the limit, falling short in a fight some believed could have gone either way. However, while you might have expected Wallin to garner more attention in the sport and be granted another opportunity, that hasn't quite been the case.
Wallin, who easily handled the overmatched Helaman Olguin back in January, recently spoke with iD BOXING, and said many fighters simply aren't interested in taking such a risk against a fighter that doesn't have the biggest name.
"I think people look at me as high risk, low reward," said Wallin, who was in discussions to face former titlist Anthony Joshua before negotiations stalled. "They saw that I did good with Fury, gave him a really tough fight. And I'm a southpaw, I'm tricky. So for some reason, it's really been hard for us to get fights. We've been trying."
One of the fighters Wallin nearly faced was British star Dillian Whyte. The pair were set to meet in October of 2021, before Whyte withdrew from the contest due to injury. The fight was never rescheduled, as Whyte instead went into a title clash with the aforementioned Fury in April of the following year.
Speaking candidly, Wallin believes Whyte made a business decision to bypass their clash in order to take the title shot. And Otto hopes he can take the frustration of that canceled fight out on Whyte in the future.
"I was happy when I got that shot to fight Dillian Whyte. The winner was going to fight Fury. I thought I was going to go in there and do a job on him. Then you see him pulling out of the fight, going and fighting Fury, and getting knocked out. So, it was a little frustrating for me," Wallin expressed.
"...I don't take it too personal, it's a business at the end of the day," Wallin continued. "He did what he thought was right. He made a lot of money by pulling out of our fight. It's frustrating for me. I have a lot of frustration within myself and I would really like to take it out on him."
Wallin is a solid Heavyweight and it would be nice to see him get another shot at a fighter at a decent level. He also mentioned a potential scrap with former titlist Joseph Parker, which would be a solid fight as Wallin continues to try and stay active with decent names across from him.
