NEWS: ROY JONES PREPPING CHRIS EUBANK FOR CANELO ALVAREZ & GENNADIY GOLOVKIN, NOT LIAM SMITH
By: Jay Calderon
Roy Jones, Jr., the Hall of Fame fighter and head trainer of Middleweight contender Chris Eubank, Jr., doesn't believe his pupil needs him for his upcoming encounter with Liam Smith.
According to Jones, Eubank has all the skills and talent necessary to defeat the level of Smith, with or without his guidance. Jones isn't here for the Liam Smiths. Rather, Jones believes he is here for when his charge gets to the Gennadiy Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez types of the sport.
"...[H]e doesn't bring me in for these particular fighters (with Smith), he brings me here to help him get better prepared for names like 'GGG' or Canelo," Jones told Sky Sports. "...He's looking down the line at the bigger fights where he knows he's going to need more than just blasting people out with combinations, that won't work against these bigger guys, against Canelo or 'GGG'."
To Jones' point, Eubank has done quite well for himself against European level and the fringe contenders of the sport. It's when he's stepped up against the top level that he has faltered, suffering both of his professional losses when in against Billy Joe Saunders and George Groves, the two best names on his resume.
Whether Jones can better prepare "Next Gen" for those career-defining fights remains to be seen.
