NEWS: SAVANNAH MARSHALL WANTS REMATCH WITH CLARESSA SHIELDS, SHOT AT FRANCHON CREWS-DEZURN
By: Jay Calderon
Back in October of last year in one of the biggest female fights of all time, Middleweight titlists Savannah Marshall and Claressa Shields. In front of 20,000 rabid fans, Shields unified the 160 pound division via unanimous decision.
While it seemed a fairly clear win for the American, Marshall believes both she and Shields know just how close the fight really was.
"There's only me and her who know really how that fight went," Marshall told Sky Sports. "Who know what shots were landing, what shots were missing, know what shots hurt. And she knows that was close.
Now, with some time in between now and the contest, Marshall is hoping to take another swing at her old rival once more. However, if a rematch can't be made, Marshall would be willing to move up to Super Middleweight and face undisputed world champion Franchon Crews-Dezurn.
Crews-Dezurn has been vocal about a Marshall encounter, Savannah claims that's only after Franchon realized the money that a fight between the pair could generate.
"Before the Claressa fight, there was an offer made to her, she didn't respond," Marshall said.
"Now she knows after seeing what happened with me and Claressa at the O2, how it was filled, the viewing figures, the response, she's knows I'm the cash cow. Now this is why she wants a piece," Marshall explained.
Either fight would be great for 2023. However, one could argue that the Crews-Dezurn contest makes a lot of sense.
It would grant Marshall a chance to regain some gold and cement herself in a new division while also giving Shields a reason to face her once again, since it would allow Claressa a chance at becoming undisputed champion in three different weight classes.
