NEWS: SPENCE, RECOVERING FROM RECENT ACCIDENT, HOPEFUL FOR CRAWFORD FIGHT IN 2023
By: Jay Calderon
During the broadcast for Michel Rivera vs. Frank Martin on Showtime, Welterweight titlist Errol Spence was interviewed by Brian Custer.
Spence, who promotes Frank Martin, was in the house to support his charge, but was asked a few questions about some hot topics surrounding himself in recent weeks.
For starters, on December 10, Spence was involved in a rather ugly car crach that occured when an underage driver of another vehicle ran a red light, striking the the car containing Spence. This is the second serious crach Spence has found himself in recent times.
Custer began by asking how Spence was feeling following the incident. Outside of some soreness, Errol suggested he was recovering well enough. However, it did push back a fight announcement he and his team had planned for around the same time.
"Can't win for losing," Spence began. "But, I'm doing great. It's very unfortunate that a 14-year-old kid steals his parent's car and, out of all people on the road, he runs into me. It's very unfortunate, but I survived. I'm doing alright, [just] a couple bruises.
"I was going to have a fight announcement, [scheduled] for three or four days after my accident, but stuff started hurting ... we kind of pushed it back. We'll wait on the announcement," said Spence.
Of course, the other bit of interest that always follows Spence is a potential showdown with fellow Welterweight titlist Terence Crawford.
In the fall, the teams of both fighters attempted to stage a fight for November, but nothing ultimately materliazed. Naturally, both sides blamed the other, but Crawford likely received more of the blame after it was discovered he had decided to take a fight with the overmatched David Avanesyan on December 10.
Ultimately, Crawford destroyed Avaneysan in six rounds, for a perported $10 million as a guarantee. Spence didn't seem so bothered by the interim bout as he did with what he considered the dishonesty in negotiations coming from the unbeaten Crawford.
"If he would have been on the up and up, and just said, 'Hey, I'm in talks with these guys, I'm fighting [Avanesyan] for $10 million. It's an easy fight, I'm going to make this money right quick, and I'll be right back', we probably could have [worked with that]. Get your money, man," Spence declared.
"The way he went about it, and then trying to blame my side for messing up the negotiations. I felt like that wasn't right at all. Hopefully, I can spin that block again, go to negotiations, and try to fight him. Because it's the fight I really want. Hopefully, we can make it happen next year," expressed Spence.
Spence also mentioned he intenders to return sometime in late spring, early summer of 2023.
