RESULTS: ARTUR BETERBIEV WINS A SHOOTOUT, STOPS ANTHONY YARDE IN EIGHT
By: Jay Calderon
On Saturday at Wembley Arena in London, England, and live on ESPN, Light-Heavyweight world titlist Artur Beterbiev extended his knockout streak, stopping the very tough Anthony Yarde in the second half of the contest.
Yarde started off the fight well, quick, while boxing and moving in the opening frame. The second saw a bit more of the same, with neither man landing anything too meaningful.
In the third and fourth, Beterbiev was beginning to land more, taking more of the initiative. At the tail end of the fourth, Beterbiev seemed to stun Yarde before the bell. However, in the fifth, Yarde came back strong and kept himself in the contest.
In one of the best rounds of the young year, the seventh saw both men land monster shots and look to end the contest. However, it was in the eighth when a counter right hand by Beterbiev that troubled Yarde. Yarde hit the deck, but was able to get up late in the count. Still. he looked in trouble.
The fight was allowed to continue momentarily, but the follow up barrage by Beterbiev forced the corner of Yarde to throw in the towel. Time of the stoppage was 2:01 of the eighth frame.
In the co-featured bout of the evening, Heavyweight debutant Moses Itauma needed less than 30 seconds and just two shots to end Marcel Bode's night early.
In the opening frame, a 1-2 from Itauma dropped Bode against the ropes. While he managed to beat the count, the referee waved off the contest at the :23 mark of the opening frame.
