On Saturday at the 3Arena in Dublin, Ireland, and live on DAZN, Chantelle Cameron retained her undisputed Jr. Welterweight championship of the world, handing the legendary Katie Taylor her first defeat in the process.
In the opening frame, Taylor was looking to move and box, trying to counter with the left hook. Cameron was looking to come forward, applying loads of pressure and scoring with a few shots down the stretch.
In the second, Taylor was moving once more, with Taylor getting a bit sharper, landing with faster bursts. Cameron, to her credit, scored well with the occasional right hand as she came forward.
Cameron was pressing hard beginning the third, but Taylor did manage to take the center of the ring a bit more in the frame. The pair traded shots to the body midway through. Taylor landed well with a left hook, right hand, but Cameron had found a home with a few stiff jabs down the middle.
Taylor started off the fourth coming forward, landing a few stiff jabs and a quick combination. A solid uppercut for Cameron landed when on the inside. Both women were taking turns landing, including a quick exchange as the round closed out.
Cameron was pressing inside to begin the fifth. Taylor landed a solid 1-2, but Cameron pressed back and dug to both the body and the head. Taylor was up against the ropes, and Cameron was landing with both hands. Taylor managed to land with a big counter right near the end of the frame.
In the sixth, Cameron was again coming forward, looking to apply that heavy pressure. Taylor threw quickly and scored well, then landed big blows on the inside. In the middle of the round, the pair traded winging shots, but the faster hands of Taylor allowed for her to perhaps land more, while Cameron landed harder.
A straight right hand landed well for Cameron to open up the seventh. With Cameron pressing forward, Taylor landed again with a quick combination. However, the right hand, left hook by Cameron moments later seemed to have more impact. Taylor scored to the body, but Cameron returned the favor.
Taylor was looking to start the eighth round sharper, and had some success countering from the outside. Still, whenever the pair traded shots or took turns landing, it felt as though Cameron had the more impactful blows. In the final thirty seconds of the round, each woman had their moments landing clean blows. Though Taylor seemed to close it out a bit stronger.
Cameron started off the ninth round well, continuing to push forward, landing with the right hand several times in the first half of the frame. Taylor tried to fight off the ropes, but the overwhelming push by Cameron allowed her to get home with some power of her own, including an uppercut on the inside. Down the stretch, both ladies landed with solid shots in an attempt to finish the frame off strong.
In the final round of action, Taylor was looking to land, then tie up on the inside. She did that well enough in the first half of the frame. Cameron was able to get a bit more off in the second half, but Taylor threw all she had into the final two minutes of the contest.
In the end, the scores were 95-95, and 96-94 twice in favor of Chantelle Cameron, earning her a majority decision win. JOB had it 95-95, a (very popular) draw after ten frames, though a Cameron win was certainly fair.
