RESULTS: EFE AJAGBA WINS HEAVYWEIGHT SNOOZER OVER STEPHAN SHAW
By: Jay Calderon
On Saturday at the Turning Stone Resort & Casino in Verona, New York, and live on ESPN, Heavyweight hopeful Efe Ajagba won a lackluster decision over previously-undefeated Stephan Shaw.
Early on, Shaw was moving well, seemed to be picking up momentum and was keeping Ajagba at bay. It was a fight that seemed to fit the style of Shaw much more than not. However, as the rounds progressed, Ajagba simply maintained a busier output and Shaw didn't match that action.
In the end, the judges agreed that the bout was close, but all favored Ajagba by a frame, 96-94 across the board. JOB had it 95-95, a draw, but the fight could have gone either way.
In the co-featured bout of the evening, veteran Heavyweight Jonnie Rice scored a small upset over previously-unbeaten Guido Vianello of Italy. Vianello was ahead on the cards, but Rice caused a nasty cut over his opponent's eye in the sixth round. When the cut was made worse in the following frame, the doctor ruled the bout could not continue.
Initially, the referee ruled the cut was from an accidental clash of heads. However, after consideration, the referee opted to review ESPN footage, and correctly ruled the cut to have been caused by a right hand. Rice improved to 16-6-1 with 10 KOs; Vianello dropped to 10-1-1.
