RESULTS: EMANUEL NAVARRETE STOPS LIAM WILSON, WINS GOLD IN EARLY FOTY CONTENDER
By: Jay Calderon
On Friday at the Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona, and live on ESPN, once-beaten Emanuel Navarrete crawled off the deck to become a three weight world champion, stopping the tough Liam Wilson in the process.
Early in the contest, Navarrete seemed to be picking his shots well, warming up nicely into the affair. However, a massive right hand caught Navarrete off guard, and Wilson scored a heavy knockdown near the end of the frame.
In the corner between rounds, Navarrete coached his team to remain calm as he shook off the cob webs. However, after recovering for most of the fifth frame, Navarrete was again rocked in the sixth, but the Aussie was unable to capitalize.
Navarrete ignored the instructions of his corner to box and remain compsoed. Instead, he continued to be Navarrete, coming forward and throwing hard punches in bunches. In the seventh and eighth, Navarrete was taking over and landing both to the head and body as Wilson began to wilt from the onslaught.
Then, in the ninth, Navarrete landed a big shot that finally dropped Wilson, who seemed hurt while beating the count. Navarrete would not let him recover, and followed up with nasty-looking shots until the referee stepped in and called a halt to the action.
Time of the stoppage was 1:57 in the ninth. Navarrete improved to 37-1 with 31KOs, while Wilson dropped to 11-2 with the loss.
