RESULTS: GERVONTA DAVIS STOPS HECTOR GARCIA; JARON ENNIS TAKEN THE DISTANCE

01/07/2023

On Saturday at the Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C., and live on Showtime pay-per-view, undefeated Gervonta Davis stopped previously-unbeaten Hector Garcia after eight rounds of action.

Both fighters were trying to settle into the contest in the opening frames, with Davis' corner preaching patience after the third frame. Davis had the first solid round of the fight in the fourth, landing some solid counters while Garcia sat back, looking to pick his spots.

In the sixth and seventh rounds, Garcia may have gotten some of his best work done, getting busier and landing some solid shots on the inside. However, he was getting tagged a bit more for his trouble.

The eighth round was an early candidate for weirdest round of the year, when a fight broke out in the crowd that caused the referee to halt the action in the ring. When action resumed, Davis got back to work and start landing some powerful blows, including a few stiff body shots. Near the end of the round, an overhand left by Davis stunned Garcia, who dipped and almost dropped.

When the round ended, Garcia needed to be told where his corner was located by the referee, and the Jr. Lightweight titlist complained of impaired vision. Ultimately, his corner pulled their fighter from the contest, awarding Davis the stoppage win.

While the fight seemed somewhat close, the cards were all wide in favor of Davis, with Garcia only earning a round from each judge. JOB had it 77-75 in favor of Davis at the time of the stoppage.

In the co-main event in the nation's capital, Welterweight contender Jaron Ennis was taken the distance when in against the ultimately overmatched Karen Chukhadzhian.

Early in the contest, Ennis seemed to be overcommitting, throwing with far too much force and not setting up his work. At one point, Ennis even spun himself around swinging and missing so big.

In perhaps the only round you could give Chukhadzhian, the fifth saw Karen be busier and landing solid shots on the inside while Ennis came in aggressively. However, Ennis bounced back well in the sixth and seventh, and finished stronger down the stretch.

The seventh round was the deepest Ennis has been as a pro, but he was ultimately taken the entire twelve frames as Chukhadzhian proved too elusive to be stopped. Though, the closest Ennis came to ending matters early was in the tenth, when his body attack seemed to momentarily slow the European down.

In the end, Ennis won a unanimous decision, sweeping all rounds on the score cards with tallies of 120-108 across the board. JOB also had it for Ennis, 119-109.
