RESULTS: JOSE RAMIREZ WEARS DOWN, STOPS RICHARD COMMEY IN THE ELEVENTH
By: Jay Calderon
On Saturday at theSave Mart Arena in Fresno, California, and live on ESPN, former Jr. Welterweight titlist Jose Ramirez grinded out a stoppage win over former Lightweight titlist Richard Commey.
In the first two rounds, the pair were trading and looking to land something meaningful. While Commey was fighting back, the rounds clearly went to Ramirez with the cleaner, more effective work. The Mexican-American dug shots into the body as well.
In the third, Commey was looking to land the overhand right, but was mostly unsuccessful. Ramirez could see the shots coming, blocked them, and landed with his own shots instead.
In the fourth, Commey had his best moments, landing better shots on the inside and keeping Ramirez shelled up for the moment. However, Ramirez also had his moments as the round progressed. The fifth saw Ramirez get back to landing those powerful right hands Commey simply couldn't seem to avoid.
The action slowed down a bit in the sixth and seventh, with both men looking to catch their breath after a rapid start to the contest. Perhaps a combination by Ramirez at the end of the seventh earned him the rather slowed frames.
In the eighth and ninth, the action picked up a bit more, with Ramirez looking to step on the gas and get his man out of there. The ten saw Ramirez getting through the gears some more, pushing his smaller foe backwards.
In the eleventh, Ramirez was looking to close the show, landing a powerful shot that had Commey on shaky legs, and he soon hit the floor. While Commey beat the count, he was in bad shape and there was plenty of time left in the round. Commey was forced to hold to survive and brought the two tumbling into the ropes.
When the pair were back up, the body blow by Ramirez ultimately dropped Commey, who elected to take a ten count on his knee. Time of the stoppage was 2:31 of the eleventh.
