RESULTS: LUIS NERY STOPS AZAT HOVHANNISYAN IN THE ELEVENTH ROUND OF ABSOLUTE WAR
By: Jay Calderon
On Saturday at the Fox Theater in Pomona, California, and live on DAZN, former titlist Luis Nery stopped the very game Azat Hovhannisyan in the leading candidate for Fight of the Year.
The fight was a war, with both men wobbled multiple times. Nery seemed in the lead after the earlier frames, as he was punishing his foe with hard shots. Hovhannisyan was beginning to bust up facially as a result of the onslaught.
In those middle frames, the body attack and overall busier work of Hovhannisyan was keeping him in the fight.
Nery pushed himself back into control of the bout, landing thunderous shots that ultimately began to wear too heavy on Hovhannisyan, who was hurt, then badly dropped in the tenth. While he beat the count and survived the round, he wasn't in great shape whatsoever.
In the eleventh, Nery began to press once more, landing a hard shot that troubled Hovhannisyan once more, causing the referee to jump in and call a halt to the action.
Time of the stoppage was 1:51 of the eleventh frame.
