RESULTS: ROBEISY RAMIREZ EASILY DECISIONS ISAAC DOGBOE, EARNS VACANT TITLE AT FEATHERWEIGHT
By: Jay Calderon
On Saturday at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and live on ESPN, Robeisy Ramirez comfortably boxed his way past former titlist Isaac Dogboe, picking up the vacant WBO Featherweight Title in the process.
In the opening round, Ramirez was looking to warm into the fight, feinting and sweeping inside the left hand. Dogboe seemed weary of the movement, but was handling the action well.
In the second, it was much of the same, but the Cuban worked a level change, landing a left hand that seemed to stun Dogboe momentarily. Ramirez landed a quick uppercut near the end of the frame that scored as well.
Ramirez scored well with a solid uppercut to start off the scoring in the third. Dogboe missed with a three punch combination, but managed to land to the body a few times. Ramirez was picking his spots well, with Dogboe only having success when he was willing to come in and throw in bunches. The action seemed to be picking up at the end of the round.
Dogboe came out solid in the fourth, and dug to the body multiple times. As Ramirez came in to get his return, a big right hand from Dogboe scored. Still, Ramirez took it well and dug in a few well placed shots of his own moments later. When Dogboe out his shots together, he did well. However, he wasn't throwing enough most of the times. Ramirez ended the round jabbing, but getting most other shots blocked.
In the fifth, Dogboe started well by putting shots together, digging to the body and then bringing the final blow upstairs. The left hook by Ramirez landed a few times just before the halfway mark of the frame, then a few more straight lefts were set up well by Robeisy. The pair traded well to end the stanza.
In the sixth, Dogboe landed a solid shot to an off balance Ramirez. However, Ramirez came back strong with a left hand, but Dogboe soon returned fire with a grazing hook. During a trade of left hands, Ramirez seemed to stun Dogboe momentarily, but the former titlist came back well with a shot to the body. However, when Dogboe lunged near the end of the frame, Ramirez scored with a combination.
Ramirez opened up the scoring in the seventh, landing an uppercut early. Dogboe returned with an overhand blow a half minute later. Both seemed to take the shots well enough. Dogboe switched to lefty in the round, and Ramirez made him pay as he landed some powerful blows down the stretch.
The volume of Dogboe was solid in the first minute of the eighth, but Ramirez was landing the cleaner, more impactful work. The left hand seemed to hardly miss when Ramirez threw it with conviction. Another straight left landed for Ramirez.
Dogboe was coming forward in the ninth, but it was Ramirez landing the better, more telling blows. While Dogboe tried in bursts, Ramirez was keeping it simple, throwing single shots that kept him picking up points.
Dogboe was trying to get something done in the tenth, but was missing pretty comfortably as Ramirez simply stepped to his left. When Dogboe would come back in, a left hand from Ramirez would be there to greet him. Robeisy ended the round well with a brief combination.
In the eleventh, Dogboe had a good start by pressing Ramirez back and simply letting his hands go. While Ramirez was mostly comfortable, he wasn't throwing until halfway through the frame. There, the Cuban did his best work, landing with theeft hand and finishing the round strong.
The final frame started out on relatively even terms, but it got worse for Dogboe when Ramirez landed an uppercut that knocked an off balance Isaac to the canvas. Dogboe clearly wasn't hurt and best the count, but his chances of winning were diminishing. Ramirez was setting up the left hand well, using angles and snapping the head back of Dogboe as he tried coming forward. Ramirez and Dogboe finished the round both missing big hooks.
In the end, the judges had it 117-110, 118-109, and 119-108 all in favor of Robeisy Ramirez, who became the new WBO Featherweight champion. Job also had it for Ramirez, 117-110.
