RESULTS: TIM TSZYU MAKES STATEMENT, STOPS TONY HARRISON IN THE NINTH
By: Jay Calderon
On Saturday at the Qudos Arena in Sydney, Australia, and live on Showtime, undefeated Tim Tszyu earned the most impressive win of his career, stopping former champion Tony Harrison in the ninth round.
In the opening round of action, Harrison controlled the round with a steady jab and some movement. However, Tszyu managed to get into the fight in the second and third, measuring his man well and landing the more telling blows.
By the fourth and fifth, Tszyu was pressing comfortably, landing hard right hands and pushing Harrison into the ropes. The American didn't seem to have any answers for the pressure, as Harrison simply kept jabbing and hoping to land a single, fight-changing shot.
Tszyu was landing telling body blows that seemed to be slowing down his foe. By the eighth round, Harrison was electing to stand and fight against the ropes, unable to box and move. Tszyu was more than happy to oblige, standing and getting the better of their trades. The eight was the last semi-competitive round.
In the ninth, Tszyu moved forward and starting landing hard right hands, Harrison not moving his head and finding no defense to protect him. Up against the ropes, Tszyu landed a vicious combination that snapped back the head of Harrison before he crumbled to the canvas.
While he managed to beat the count, Harrison was still wobbly and the referee elected to call a halt to the action. Time of the stoppage was 2:43 of the ninth frame.
With the win, Tszyu improved to 22-0 with 16 stoppages, while Harrison dropped to 29-4-1 with the loss.
